The Killers

The Killers

The Killers are a Las Vegas-based four-piece who formed in 2003, featuring the talents of singer/keyboardist Brandon Flowers, drummer Ronnie Vannucci, guitarist Dave Keuning and bassist Mark Stoermer. The band has received countless accolades for their artistic achievement, including multiple Grammy nominations, American Music Award nominations, MTV Video Music Awards, NME Awards and more. Their first album, Hot Fuss, was released in 2004 to worldwide acclaim.

The album contained the singles “Mr. Brightside” and “Somebody Told Me,” in addition to the anthemic song “All These Things That I’ve Done,” which has since been referenced by the likes of U2. The band toured for two years straight behind Hot Fuss, playing more than four-hundred shows, and eventually returned to Vegas to begin to work on the follow-up album with legendary producers Alan Moulder and Flood. The result, a love letter of sorts to their hometown entitled Sam’s Town, was released in 2006 and spent forty-two weeks on the Billboard Top 200. A b-sides collection entitled Sawdust was released in 2007, followed by their third studio album, Day & Age, which was released to widespread critical praise in 2008, anchored by massive single “Human.”

The Killers released Battle Born in September 2012, which saw them expanding their world tour into countries they’ve never visited before, and finally were honored to perform at the world-renowned Wembley Stadium, one of the most monumental and significant shows of their career. After a decade of making music, in November 2013, The Killers released a “Best Of” collection, Direct Hits, which featured two incredible new songs alongside classics from the band’s revered catalogue. The band, who have sold over twenty-five million albums worldwide, and headlined all of the world’s top festivals (Coachella, Lollapalooza, Glastonbury), released their chart-topping album, Wonderful Wonderful, in September 2017. It garnered the band their first No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart the week of its release in the U.S., as well as topping the charts in the U.K., Mexico, and Australia.

In 2020, The Killers released their highly-anticipated new studio album, Imploding The Mirage. Hailed by critics as one of the best records in the band’s already stellar catalogue, the album was the band’s sixth consecutive number one in the U.K., and Brandon Flowers’ eighth U.K. number one overall, making the band the first international act to receive six consecutive #1’s in the United Kingdom. Imploding The Mirage also went Top 10 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart, making it their sixth Top Ten album in America, and gave the band their second consecutive #1 in Australia; their fifth #1 in Ireland; a Top Five album in Austria, Belgium, Mexico, and New Zealand; and a Top Ten album in Canada and Germany.

Khalid

Khalid

Khalid’s story feels as remarkable as ever. A self-described introvert and loner in high school, he shared the breakout single ‘Location’ on the eve of his graduation. The song would eventually go quadruple-platinum and introduce his double-platinum full-length debut, American Teen— which ascended to #4 on the Top 200, occupied its Top 20 for 48 weeks and spent a total of 51 weeks on the respective chart. Vaulting to stardom with billions of streams to his credit and a regular position as one of the Top 3 Most-Streamed Artists in the World on Spotify, he garnered five GRAMMY® Award nominations. He also took home honours at the Billboard Music Awards, Teen Choice Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and American Music Awards.

Khalid’s voice has graced smashes such as Calvin Harris’s ‘Rollin’ with Future, ‘Lovely’ with Billie Eilish and ‘Youth’ with Shawn Mendes, to name a few. He also teamed up with Normani for the double-platinum ‘Love Lies’, which captured #1 on Top 40.

Khalid’s second album, Free Spirit, debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and included 2 more top 10 hits ‘Better’ and ‘Talk’. ‘Talk’ was nominated for Record of the Year at the 62nd Grammy Awards and ranked 29th on Billboard’s 100 Best Songs of 2019 list.

We are delighted to welcome the talented Khalid to Splendour XR and can’t wait to see what he has in store!

Denzel_Curry

Denzel Curry

On stage, rapper Denzel Curry can conjure the energy of a stage-diving punk singer, but as he’s matured as an artist, he’s lept into sonic versatility and an indomitable drive to be as unpredictable as possible. It’s a delicate balancing act, but the artist born in Carol City, Florida, in 1995 has diversified his delivery and style with each subsequent effort since his first mixtape, King Remembered Underground Tape 1991–1995, in 2011. “I found a way to be crazy and stable at the same time,” Curry told Apple Music about those early days, both solo and as a novice member of the seminal South Florida group, Raider Klan. Though the group disbanded in 2013, Curry is still indebted to the role elders like SpaceGhostPurrp played in his development. “Raider Klan had to exist. In that short period of time, we had a huge impact on the next generation. We see it every day,” Curry added. After the breakup, Curry began making noise on the internet with elevated raps and a penchant for inimitable flow patterns. His breakthrough album, 2016’s Imperial, included “Ult,” which introduced a wider audience to Curry’s trademark military-style drumming. He expanded upon his percussive delivery on albums like TA13OO and ZUU, both from 2019, which showcased his versatile songwriting and ability to move from classic-era, head-nodding beats to synth-heavy jams highlighted by his nimble singing voice. Once married to a particular way of approaching rap, Curry has since emerged as the genre’s hardest-working chameleon.

Vance Joy

Vance Joy

One of Australia’s finest contemporary singer-songwriters, Vance Joy has two #1 Australian albums to his name, 2014’s dream your life away and 2018’s Nation of Two. He has been the recipient of two ARIA awards (Best Male and Best Adult Contemporary Album) and nine of his songs are now ARIA-certified platinum or multi-platinum, including his breakout single ‘Riptide’, which is currently 12x platinum.

With over 3.1 billion streams to his name, Vance Joy’s story is equally as impressive globally. Nation of Two cracked the Top 10 of Billboard’s ‘200’ Albums Chart on release and was #2 in Canada. His songs have topped the Alt Radio and Triple A Charts in the US time and time again, and in a pre-COVID era he graced a swag of UK and US TV shows including Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Night with Seth Myers, Jools Holland, The Today Show and Good Morning America.

His affable charm and unassuming talent have won hearts around the map and saw him perform 83 dates on his Nation of Two Tour, with performances at dream venues including Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, Budweiser Stage in Toronto and Rod Laver Arena in his hometown of Melbourne. He has played festivals including Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Splendour in the Grass and also toured stadiums around the world in direct support of pop powerhouses Taylor Swift and P!NK.

Vance Joy’s new single ‘Missing Piece’ is the glowing next instalment of his story and the first taste of much more music to come.

Duke Dumont

So unassuming is Adam George Dyment aka Duke Dumont, that it’s easy to forget he played one of the most pivotal roles in making UK deep house the thundering global juggernaut it is today. Simultaneously dropping #1 hits across the last decade like ‘Need U (100%)’, ‘I Got U’ and ‘Ocean Drive’, whilst pumping out tracks that permeated underground club scenes. He’s continually shifting the lines and redefining the realms of UK dance and pop. His performances are pulsating, emotional journeys. But, at the end of the day, the show would be nothing if the source material wasn’t strong enough, and that’s where Dumont excels.

With an untouchable back catalogue of originals and new album, Duality, under his belt, Duke Dumont’s Splendour XR set is sure to be an addictive mix of sonic exploration. Get ready!

Grimes Metaverse (Super Beta)

The voices in Grimes’ head (the art angels from whom all of her creative visions are bestowed) – have formed an Ai Girl Group. As technology improves so will they, but beta version will now be testing in public!  Splendour XR will be the first testing.

Of Monsters and Men

Of Monsters and Men

OF MONSTERS AND MEN went from the talk of Iceland to the top of the global conversation on their 2011 debut, My Head Is An Animal. Not only did the record go platinum, but it also produced an international smash in the form of “Little Talks.” The breakthrough single earned a quintuple-platinum certification from the RIAA, made history as “the first song by an Icelandic band to cross 1 billion streams on Spotify,” and landed the band a performance on Saturday Night Live. The group appeared on official soundtracks for franchises such as The Hunger Games, The Walking Dead, and Beat Bugs, to name a few. In addition to performing at festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, Firefly, and beyond, they supported Florence + the Machine on a high-profile arena tour. In the midst of this rapid rise, 2015’s Beneath The Skin bowed in the Top 3 of the Billboard Top 200 and the band starred in an episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones in the same year. In 2019, the group welcomed listeners into the embrace of their critically acclaimed third full-length album, FEVER DREAM. Not only did the record tally 80 million-plus total streams to date, but it also attracted acclaim from Billboard to NPR.

The Avalanches

Since their ground-breaking debut, Since I Left You in 2000, The Avalanches have remained at the top as one of Australia’s most distinctive and influential acts. The record quickly became recognised as a modern classic and was named one of the year’s best albums by critics around the world, it was placed in the Top 10 of Pitchfork’s Top 200 Albums of the 2000s and in the Top 20 of Rolling Stone’s Greatest EDM Albums of All Time.

Although not released for 16 years after their debut, the act’s sophomore album, Wildflower, was also released upon the world with a bang! Debuting at No.1 on Billboard’s Vinyl Albums chart and atop the Australian Albums chart in 2016, the record earned six ARIA Award nominations and international acclaim.

The Avalanches third album, We Will Always Love You, follows this trajectory. Released in December, the album was described as “A vibrant cosmic journey like no other, and a love letter to the unifying power of music” by NME and took out the prestigious 2020 Australian Music Prize.

Sampling remains at the core of the latest release but this time with more living guests than ever. Featuring MGMT, Rivers Cuomo, Denzel Curry, Johnny Marr, Neneh Cherry, Perry Farrell, Karen O, Mick Jones, Sampa the Great, Tricky, Kurt Vile, Blood Orange and more, the album drips with melody and feels like a reunion of old friends – mellow, warm, all hugs and nostalgic stories.

Get ready for goosebumps when The Avalanches play Splendour XR!

Tash Sultana

Tash Sultana

Tash Sultana, the gender fluid multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, producer and engineer, has been dubbed one of the hardest working music exports in Australia. From a viral bedroom recording of ‘Jungle’ and street-stopping busking performances in Melbourne, to setting attendance records on non-stop, sold out global tours, Tash’s accolades rush in faster than there is time to count them.

Tash’s second album Terra Firma arrives four years after ARIA-winning #2 debut album Flow State – which spawned the 2x Platinum single ‘Jungle’ and the Platinum-selling single ‘Mystik’. Written and recorded over a full year, Terra Firma saw Tash in full flight as they recorded, engineered, performed, arranged, and produced the album themselves.

From the expansive ‘Coma’ and evocative ‘Greed’ to the intuitive ‘Beyond The Pine’, Tash adds to their trademark looped and layered jams with a dazzling patchwork of soul, funk, R&B, folk, rock, hip-hop – you name it. The result is Tash’s most ambitious triumph to date.
Terra Firma is recognisably Tash Sultana, but its lyricism delves deeper, its impact more nuanced. While Terra Firma still cements the oft-used description of a “one person band”, the record hosts a first for Tash Sultana with four carefully chosen co-writers and close friends brought in for just a handful of songs: Matt Corby, Dann Hume, Jerome Farah and Josh Cashman.

As a cohesive collection, Terra Firma is Tash Sultana on full display. Each track opens a new door into the mind of Tash, whose musical integrity and confessional poetry soar on the wings of that octave-vaulting voice.

Kaytranada

Kaytranada

Haitian-Canadian DJ and record producer Louis Kevin Celestin AKA Kaytranada, (stylized as KAYTRANADA, shortened as KAYTRA), began his career under the alias Kaytradamus in 2010. In December 2014 he signed an exclusive recording agreement with XL Recordings, releasing his stunning debut album, 99.9% in May 2016. The album melds slinky rhythms with irresistible bass grooves and a generous does of soul, and includes a raft of guests including GoldLink, AlunaGeorge, Syd tha Kyd, Anderson .Paak, and Vic Mensa among others.

In 2019 Kaytranada released Bubba, a departure from his debut, a unique blend of neo-soul, hip-hop, afrobeat and more in a dance style the artist simply described as “funky”. BUBBA is also jam-packed with illustrious features such as Pharrell Williams, Kali Uchis, Estelle, GoldLink and more.

Whether you’re watching Splendour XR solo from your loungeroom, or at a party with your mates, Kaytranada will have you dancing!

Jungle

Jungle

Mercury nominated, British producer duo, Jungle, return in 2021 with a brand new album ‘Loving In Stereo’ on August 13th.

2021 heralds a new era for Jungle – the duo spent the past year locked in a studio and have emerged, delivering a dance-floor record for the summer and beyond, with a life-affirming celebration of all the things that make music joyful.

It is also the first time Jungle have worked with other vocalists, Tamil-Swiss Priya Ragu and US rapper Bas both feature on the new album.

Jungle are world builders, two creative directors at the helm of an art project.  Choreography lies at the heart of Jungle’s universe and this can be seen in every video they have ever made including their latest release ‘Keep Moving’.

In their career to date, Jungle have gone from selling-out London’s 10,000 capacity Alexandra Palace to filling the Hollywood Palladium some 9,000 kilometres from home. They’ve performed multiple continents, headlining shows from Sydney to Moscow, while also winning new fans at festivals such as Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza.

There’s no doubt that Jungle will have you dancing when they play Splendour XR!

Masked Wolf

Masked Wolf

Transforming from a mild-mannered man by day into an unrestrained beast in the studio, Masked Wolf (aka, Harry Michael) has unassumingly established himself as a powerful, passionate, and primal hip-hop force. After graduating from school, the Sydney, Australia native tirelessly worked in sales to fund recording. He even took out a loan to build a home studio as he cut hundreds of songs and logged thousands of hours in the lab. In 2018, he dropped his independent debut “Speed Racer.” It gathered millions of streams and turned heads across Australia. Following “Night Rider” and “Water Walkin,” he unveiled “Astronaut in the Ocean.” Awash in airy guitar, jagged 808s, neon keys, and deft wordplay, he submerged himself in honest lyricism, facing depression head-on. That one-two-punch of a recognizable riff and chantable chorus organically caught fire online. It quickly incited 350,000-plus Tik Tok videos, spanning everything from footage of U.S. military Blackhawk chopper crews to welders and ice fisherman (far from your typical Tik Tok fare!). Meanwhile, Kansas City Chief Super Bowl champ quarterback Patrick Mahomes even incorporated the tune into an Instagram post, fueling its explosion in early 2021. Amassing streams in the hundreds of millions and counting , the buzzing rapper and singer unleashes a torrent of personal truths and emotions on his 2021 debut for Elektra Records and more to come.

Russ_Millions

Russ Millions

Shylo Batchelor Ashby Milwood (born 20 March 1996) known professionally as Russ Millions, is a British rapper and songwriter. In December 2018 he released his single “Gun Lean” on Virgin Records. The track peaked at number 9 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the first UK drill track to reach the top 10.

The dance that Russ performs in the music video became a “dance craze” and was mimicked by footballers including Jesse Lingard. It was ranked by The Guardian at number 10 on their list of “greatest pop music dance crazes”.

In April 2019 his follow-up single “Keisha & Becky” with Tion Wayne entered the UK Singles Chart at number 19, and later peaked at number seven. The song later became BPI platinum-certified.

Russ Millions and Tion Wayne released “Body” through GDS and Atlantic Records (Warner) on 25 March 2021. The song was produced by Gotcha and promoted with a TikTok dance challenge, as well as a remix released in April 2021 featuring Bugzy Malone, Fivio Foreign, Darkoo, Buni, ArrDee, E1 and ZT. “Body” reached number four on the UK Singles Chart.

The track was named one of the “14 Songs that Give Us Hope for the Future” by the staff of Vice magazine, with writer Ryan Bassil commenting that another collaboration between the pair was “always going to be good” after “Keisha & Becky”. Bassil also called the track a “400-degree rap collab” with “several petrol stations’ worth of gasoline-soaked bars”.

BAND OF HORSES

Band of Horses

Beginning with their first LP, the RIAA gold certified Everything All The Time, Band of Horses have positioned themselves as a mainstay for more than a decade with 5 studio albums in total, including Grammy nominated Infinite Arms, Mirage Rock, and most recently, Why Are You Ok? executive produced by the illustrious Rick Rubin.

Formed and led by singer and songwriter Ben Bridwell, the South Carolina based band have given us a multitude of much loved singles, including “The Funeral” and “No One’s Gonna Love You”, and have played globe spanning headline tours as well as shows with greats like Pearl Jam and Neil Young.

The band’s sixth LP is due out this year, produced in large part by Bridwell himself, and in anticipation of its release, the band are playing several US festivals including ACL Festival, Firefly and Lollapalooza.

We can’t wait to see what Band of Horses have in store when they play Splendour XR!

Phoebe Bridgers

Phoebe Bridgers

“Yesterday, Tomorrow.”

The house is exactly what you’d expect: practically a studio apartment except it stands on its own, draped in honeysuckle and Dutchman’s pipe; a yard of dune sedge and stone. Her dog is buried in the garden along the eastern wall; sometimes, she wonders if the ground will bloom half-a-dozen of him under a certain kind of moon. In the morning the light creeps sideways through the windows and lights her up from the chest down, her head nestled in the shadow. Sometimes she finds herself playing guitar before she has left sleep. Her hands strum but her mind is still dreaming. (It’s her birthday, she’s at the movies, the screen is a tidal wave, someone touches her leg, she wakes up with her fingers tangled in the strings and the kettle whistling.)

The house is haunted. It should go without saying, but it should be said anyway. The house is haunted, but no one knows anything about the ghost or how it messes with you, except for the fact that every time she goes away (to Texas, to Memphis, to Graceland, to Germany) she always ends up coming home again. It’s the strangest kind of haunting. Everyone calls it, the house, the House of Punishment—more than one mistaken citizen has turned up looking for a similarly-named erotic dungeon on the other side of town—but the name is misleading. It is not a house where someone was punished, or a house where someone might be punished, but a house that replaces punishment; instead of feeling guilt or regret you must play quietly in any corner, and eventually the emotion will resolve itself.

Inside, every door frame is notched: the respective growths of former tenants, friends. On one of them, a place where—deep in her cups—she’d measured her height as a full five inches taller than normal; only the next morning did she realize, cotton-mouthed, that she’d been standing on her toes when she’d slid the pencil over the apex of her skull. There had been a Murphy bed once, she was certain, and sometimes when she was very, very tired she would imagine her bed, which was not a Murphy bed, snapping her up into the wall. Next to her bed, in her nightstand drawer, lived the following things: crumpled receipts, red yarn, eight dollars, a white lighter, two undeveloped film cameras, Grether’s Pastilles in their old-timey tin, fistfuls of birthday cards with the shimmer worn off, a pocket-sized copy of the constitution, a pocket knife, a pair of swimming goggles, a pair of recording headphones, shoelaces twisted into a Gordian knot, an unpaid parking ticket, a strip of Peanuts Halloween stickers, an MRI request form from when she sprained her finger, colloidal silver (someone told her it would cure her cold; someone else told her it would give her Argyria), a map of Kyoto (she’d gotten bored at the temple), incense, her first fan letter (she promised herself she’d respond; she never did), a bunch of bolts, a plastic doll’s hand, doggie bags (he’d died over a year ago), an unopened Replacements cassette, an unopened 23 & Me kit, an unopened fortune cookie, unopened pepper spray she doesn’t trust herself to take out of the packaging. In a fake book on her desk—pleather-bound and conspicuously absent a title—she collects her used boarding passes, old concert tickets, disconnected wristbands. It doesn’t escape her notice that she can’t throw anything away, that objects remain unopened, unresolved, untangled, unconsumed. She is always in the middle. She is never at the end of anything.

She lives near a hospital. All night, she hears sirens, imagines the people being transported to and fro, their bodies speeding along in the back of ambulances and their spirit trying to catch up. She makes jokes. “If I wake up, someone better be dying,” she says, until one night she wakes up and feels it: someone’s essence slipping past her on the way to somewhere else. After that, she thinks about the hospital as a metaphor, and considers the many ailments the metaphorical hospital could cure, the many symptoms it could treat: Imposter syndrome. Cabin fever. Foot-in-mouth disease. Word vomit.

She invites her friends—that is to say, her family—over for dinner. She has this one friend whose dad was really obsessed with blood—blood as in family, not the interesting kind of blood—and how it was thicker than water (ew), and then one day her friend looked up the actual expression and it was, The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. Shit, right? Anyway, she makes a green bean casserole, which is demolished in short order, and hot rolls. Someone kills a pint of ice cream she’s been saving. Someone else drinks a beer so hard it sputters, erupts. Someone else sits in the corner playing cat’s cradle, waiting to feel the guilt lift from their sternum.

After that, the coven of her covenant goes out beneath the new moon; they journal and play Bright Eyes and Britney Spears and act out María Irene Fornés’ plays and eat peaches. They lie on the grass and the stone and talk about the skies they were born under. They don’t believe, really, that it makes a difference, but it’s nice to think about. After all, everyone knows the world is ending. They’ve been told as much, and they can see it in the streets, and they know the world is irreparably fucked, but most importantly they feel it among themselves; they know this goodness cannot last forever.

She sits near them. They are together but at the same time they are alone, as we all are. Someone has put a braid into her hair; she’s left toothmarks on someone else. Something moves through the empty house, less the ghost than the breath of the ghost. She tells her friends: “I’m not afraid to disappear.” Someone laughs. Then, someone else opens their mouth, and something else climbs out.

Little Simz

Little Simz

With Mercury and Mobo nominations, Ivor Novello and NME Awards, a critically garlanded music career and a starring role in Top Boy, one of the most talked about Netflix reboots under her belt, Little Simz has undoubtedly had a meteoric few years, coming a long way from her start handing out mixtapes in the school playground. There’s no question she was always poised for success though; she has always been an artist – wildly ambitious, fiercely talented and devoted to her work – for as long as she can remember. But it wasn’t until she started marking her new album, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, on the verge of her twenty-sixth birthday, that she realised the toll that success was taking on her personal life. “I decided to go out to LA and do some sessions. I wanted to open a fresh notebook and analyse this part of my life; I didn’t find the writing experience easy, I went to depths that are really uncomfortable” she admits. “I pushed my pen, I really challenged myself”.

The result is her most cathartic and ambitious record yet, a coruscating journey into the heart of what it means to be alive in these tumultuous times, and one which looks set to neatly cement her position as one of the most potent and vital young talents around today.

Black Pumas

Black Pumas

The trajectory of Austin-based band Black Pumas has seen a phenomenal rise since the duo formed in 2017. Grammy-winning producer and guitarist Adrian Quesada was introduced to Eric Burton, a powerhouse songwriter and street performer, by a mutual friend. The two musicians connected and the first day they got together in the studio, they recorded what would become the Black Pumas’ first two singles, “Black Moon Rising” and “Fire.” 2019 saw the band selling out tours in the US, EU, and UK and receiving a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. The following year, their critically acclaimed self-titled debut for ATO Records was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2021 Grammys, and its lead single “Colors,” which has surpassed 150 million streams, was nominated for Record of the Year. From their incredible appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Good Morning America, and more, to their Emerging Act of the Year win at the 2020 Americana Music Association Honors & Awards and their moving performance at the 2021 Biden-Harris Inauguration, Black Pumas have had an explosive year and it’s about to get even bigger when they play Splendour XR!

Aurora

Aurora

Norwegian artist AURORA’s star shines as bright as the astronomical phenomenon for which she is named. Her first three studio albums focused in on issues like global capitalism, the environmental crisis and what it means to be a human amid it all. In stark, angular pop she debated with herself, urged us to stand up for ourselves and each other, and gave us mantras to chant like “You cannot eat money”.

In May 2020 AURORA released “Exist For Love”, her first love song, which was made during the Covid lockdown. It marked a new era for the artist and a glimpse of new music to come. For the first time, AURORA is ready to share her inner self with us.

Earlier this year she also released two compilation EPs to mark her hit track “Runaway” hitting 100M streams on Spotify (it has since exceeded 250M), For the Humans Who Take Long Walks in the Forest and Music for the Fellow Witches Out There.

She has played a long list of top tier festivals around the globe including Glastonbury, Coachella, Roskilde, Governor’s Ball to name just a few, and in 2020 also joined a select club of artist’s who have performed at the Oscars. We’re thrilled to welcome AURORA to Splendour XR!

What_So_Not

What So Not

2021 marks the 10-year anniversary of What So Not. For Chris Emerson, the creative at the heart of the project, it is a time of realization and research, rethinking and renewal. It would be easy for the Australian producer and DJ to stay sequestered in What So Not’s significant accomplishments, not the least of which are surpassing one billion global streams and collecting Gold Plaques. Instead, Emerson scaled back his touring to get re-centered as a person and refreshed as an artist. He immersed himself in an artist community, absorbing a variety of creative stimuli and exploring new ways of expressing himself. The first decade of What So Not revolved around high-profile collaborations, headlining tours and major festivals across the globe, not to mention creative artistic achievements. The second decade of What So Not starts with reflection and revitalization, and new innovations from the ever-shifting Emerson.

Hot Dub Time Machine

Hot Dub Time Machine

Since first launching his time-travelling, ‘dance-through-the-decades’ audio-visual party concept in 2011, Sydney’s Tom Loud has grown his project into an absolute monster.

He’s blitzed the festival circuit back home in Australia, headlining Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival and more multiple times over, and has sold-out back-to-back Australian headline tours.

The key success of Hot Dub’s show is hinged on its widespread appeal –  Hot Dub showcases songs from every decade and genre of music – 60s rock, 70s disco, 80s cheese, 90s house, noughties electro, 2017’s radio hits – and winds and weaves it into one expansive, electrifying, music history lesson. millennium parade is a creative collective, which is is an energetic and inspiring group, composed of artists from various creative fields including musicians, a film director, visual effects artist, designer, illustrator and so on. It’s organized by Daiki Tsuneta, a producer and songwriter based in Tokyo, Japan.

Their concept is inspired by “Hyakki Yakō” – “The Night Parade of One Hundred Demons”, deriving from centuries old Japanese folklore. The ‘night parade’ saw supernatural creatures roam the streets causing utter pandemonium throughout Japan. This chaos and mystery underlies the group’s collective vision to present Tokyo’s new values to the rest of the world.

Their song ‘Fly with me’, was the main theme song for world famous Japanese animation ‘Ghost In The Shell: SAC_2045’ and it was remixed by the renowned Steve Aoki. Despite being a relatively new and curiously mysterious group, they have already collaborated with DIOR and most recently adidas, for whom Tsuneta was recently named a GlobalAmbassador.

The chaos will continue with their debut album, now available.

The Jungle Giants

With well over 325 million streams worldwide and growing, The Jungle Giants are fast becoming an unstoppable force. Known for delivering explosive high-energy live performances, the band include all-rounder Sam Hales (vocalist/guitarist/songwriter/producer), lead guitarist Cesira Aitken, bassist Andrew Dooris and drummer Keelan Bijker.

Kicking off 2021 with a bang, The Jungle Giants placed #8 in the Triple J Hottest 100 for the second year in a row, with fan-favourite ‘Sending Me Ur Loving’. Their most recent single ‘In Her Eyes’ also took out spot #89.

Despite its challenges, 2020 was a big year for the band. Starting in January, The Jungle Giants completed a world tour, winning over fans in the United States, Mexico, Japan, UK, Netherlands and France. In fortunate timing, their tour ended in mid-March just before the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world. With subsequent touring cancelled, Sam bunkered down in the band’s production room in Melbourne and spent the remaining year writing and recording The Jungle Giants’ upcoming fourth album due later in 2021.

Regarded as Australian indie rock royalty, The Jungle Giants keep going from strength to strength, with recent wins including racking up ARIA-certified Platinum singles in ‘Feel The Way I Do’, ‘Used To Be In Love’ and ‘Heavy Hearted’; as well as taking home the fiercely competitive Queensland Music Award in 2020 for ‘Song of the Year’. With headline festival performances under their belt and a rapidly growing international fan base, The Jungle Giants have cemented themselves as one of the biggest independent acts in Australia.

Ocean Alley

Ocean Alley

Australia’s beloved psychedelic-surf-rockers Ocean Alley have spent the past decade creating a unique lane for themselves as a proudly independent band; their vision and sound guided solely by their instinct and passion.

2020 saw the band debut at #3 on the ARIA Album Chart with their critically acclaimed, ARIA-nominated third album Lonely Diamond, garnering four-star reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone and NME. It follows the success of 2018’s breakthrough Chiaroscuro which saw the six-piece propelled into national prominence with their double platinum-selling single ‘Confidence’ that took out #1 in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2018.

Despite sold out international tours and major festival appearances including Reading & Leeds (UK), Splendour In The Grass (AUS) and Sziget (HU) under their belt, plus more than 400 million catalogue streams worldwide, they are still constantly pushing their own boundaries and defying expectations of what their music can be.

Vera Blue

The metamorphosis of gifted folk singer/songwriter Celia Pavey into the electro pop powerhouse Vera Blue has been as visually electrifying as it has musically scintillating.

It began with the release of the critically lauded EP “Fingertips” and its achingly ethereal breakthrough platinum single HOLD. Musically, the track fuses Pavey’s raw lyrical insights and captivating vocals with elegant, hypnotic electronica.

The rapturously received debut album “Perennial” came next; along with that dance-inducing, double platinum single REGULAR TOUCH – and its far more cinematic visual direction. The album saw Vera Blue play 5 completely sold out Australian tours, European/UK and USA dates, and multiple festivals including Lollapalooza and Splendour in the Grass.

The blinding success of “Perennial” was followed by the globally penetrating Flume collab “Rushing Back” (#2 on Triple J’s Hottest 100); and two chart topping post album singles. The breezily melodic ALL THE PRETTY GIRLS scales down the electronica and turns up the folk-pop; while THE WAY THAT YOU LOVE ME moved back towards electronic grunge and showed us how sometimes love can be taken advantage of.

Which brings us to the next exhilarating chapter in the Vera Blue Odyssey, and the 2020 single – called LIE TO ME. If the tracks on “Perennial” were written in the ashes of a devastating break up, then LIE TO ME is Pavey losing her mind at the other end of the romantic spectrum – falling IN love. Don’t miss it when Vera Blue plays Splendour XR!

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizzard

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard’s sense of unfettered sonic exploration makes it easy to mistake them for a long-forgotten relic of the psych explosion of the ’60s. With a far-out sound that, at times, feels barely held together, King Gizzard evoke the eclectic rock experimentation of Frank Zappa’s early work with the Mothers of Invention, the anything-goes feeling of the Flaming Lips, and the demented glee of a random, obscure ’60s group plucked from a Pebbles compilation as they follow their musical flights of fancy wherever they might lead. King Gizzard’s prolific nature led them to release albums at a frenetic pace, and their intense desire to seek out new sounds and follow new paths — from expansive jazz-rock (2015’s Quarters) to semi-acoustic ballads (the same year’s Paper Mâché Dream Balloon), and from sci-fi prog (2017’s Murder of the Universe) to trippy garage rock (2014’s I’m in Your Mind Fuzz) — meant that every one of their multitude of releases sounded different from the last, and each one was worth checking out. Some of their albums, especially Nonagon Infinity from 2016, stand shoulder to shoulder with the best psychedelic rock ever made and even their most daring moves — like releasing a death metal concept album with 2019’s Infest the Rats Nest — land like a knockout punch.

Griff

Griff

19-year-old Griff has successfully created her own world from scratch – and now she’s ready to let the rest of the world in. Griff’s ‘Mirror Talk’ EP was released to widespread acclaim in 2019. In 2020 she released two hugely acclaimed singles, ‘Forgive Myself’ (complete with a video shot at home on her iPhone), and ‘Say It Again’, before being nominated for an Ivor Novello Award (their first Rising Star category).

Griff closed out 2020 with more pinch-yourself moments. She took over the Tate Modern for her second ever London show, framing the singer, producer, DIY fashion designer and future-pop-star as the world-class talent that she is. Griff was then unveiled as the voice behind Disney’s first Christmas ad campaign, marking its 40-year partnership with children’s charity Make-A-Wish®, which featured specially-recorded track, ‘Love Is A Compass’.

Griff began 2021 in the top 5 of the BBC’s prestigious Sound of 2021 poll, was hailed by Taylor Swift on social media and dropped brand new single ‘Black Hole’.

Griff’s world is a fully-encompassing one, from producing tracks to designing sets and making her own clothes, it is a world that she is solely in charge of. Be a part of it at Splendour XR!

Sinead Harnett

Sinéad Harnett

Sinéad Harnett’s sophomore album Ready Is Always Too Late dropped May 2021 and is a reintroduction to Sinéad Harnett, the rising R&B icon we truly deserve. Her narrative has been a slow and steady progression of coming from nothing to someone whose name you’ll never forget. The gospel of Sinéad is vibrating on a higher level and while the rest of her story remains unwritten because we are all works in progress, this is only the beginning. “There’s not a huge amount of Thai representation in R&B and in a tasteful way I would like to introduce people a bit more to my roots,” she concludes. “You have to be authentic to be on the right path for yourself.”

Music has always been the most stable force in Sinéad’s life. It was a piano that became a cathartic outlet for her while growing up in North London and provided the therapeutic company that she so desperately craved from her separated parents. The daughter of a Thai mother and an Irish father, Sinéad has always been the archetype of a blended identity—it’s no surprise that her own music is a reflection of this melting pot as well. Powerhouses like Lauryn Hill and Tina Turner have always spoken to Sinéad on a deeper level, filling her head with the intense feelings embedded in the fabric of R&B and soul.

Don’t miss Sinéad beautiful sound when she takes the stage for Splendour XR!

Holly_Humberstone

Holly Humberstone

In less than a year, Holly Humberstone has become the most hotly-tipped artist and recently named in the prestigious BBC Sound of 2021 longlist. The 20-year-old singer-songwriter’s accolades are far reaching for an artist so young. From being chosen as Apple’s Up Next Artist following in the footsteps of Billie Eilish and BENEE, to performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and being one of VEVO DSCVR’s Artists To Watch 2021, the Grantham based artist’s rise is unstoppable. Holly’s critically acclaimed debut EP Falling Asleep at the Wheel has already amassed over 50 million streams and started life within the poetry books she was raised on, and later developed her signature sound and incredible storytelling.

Holly recently starred in ‘On The Run’, a 15-minute film which documents the story of her first body of work. Shot in a few takes in a paper mill in the Midlands, close to Holly’s hometown of Grantham, the camera follows Holly through a haunting performance that is both delicate, can-hear-a-pin-drop, to expansive, headline moments. With the script written by Holly herself, the 20-year-old singer’s home has been at the heart of her songwriting and visual collages, taking the viewer on a unique journey.

Tayla Parx

Tayla Parx

Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and boundary breaker Tayla Parx reimagines genre, gender, feminism, popular music and the very definition of an artist. From the onset of her career, Parx has consistently shifted perspectives on stage as a performer, behind-the-scenes as a songwriter and on-screen as an actress in television, films and video games. In 2019, she was the first female songwriter to have three simultaneous top 10 songs—Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” and “thank u, next” and Panic! At The Disco’s “High Hopes”—in the Billboard Hot 100 since 2014. Parx notably penned a total of six tracks on Grande’s blockbuster album Positions, including “34+35” and “pov.” Not to mention co-writing the double-platinum track “Love Lies” for Khalid and Normani, Anderson .Paak’s “Tints” (feat. Kendrick Lamar), Dan and Shay’s “Glad you Exist,” Dua Lipa’s “It Ain’t’ Me” and four cuts off Janelle Monáe’s record Dirty Computer.

The music industry is quickly becoming TaylaMade and we can’t wait to see what she has in store for Splendour XR!

Spacey Jane

Spacey Jane

Pardon the pun, but it’s fair to say that Spacey Jane’s rise has been of the meteoric variety.

As all good bands do, Spacey Jane started off as a bunch of mates who liked making music in their family’s garage. Now, the four-piece Perth outfit bust out garage pop tunes and share stages with some of the world’s best. Catchy guitar riffs paired with laid-back, easy going melodies is their game, and they play it damn well as can be seen with their debut album Sunlight, where their massive track Booster Seat slid into the #2 spot in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2020.

We are thrilled to welcome Spacey Jane to Splendour XR!

Methyl Ethel

Methyl Ethel

Methyl Ethel—the moniker of West Australian multi-hyphenate Jake Webb—makes music that draws from myriad influences and a history of new wave and indie rock, whilst sounding like its own thing entirely. Both familiar and alien, intimate and aloof, you never quite know what you’re in for, but the trip is bound to be enchanting.

Across three albums (2015’s Oh Inhuman Spectacle, 2017’s Everything Is Forgotten and 2019’s Triage) and three EPs (2014’s Teeth and Guts, 2020’s Hurts To Laugh), Webb has proven to be a prolific and masterful purveyor of eccentric alt-pop. Methyl Ethel has attracted two Australian Music Prize nominations, a top 5 Hottest 100 placement with the ARIA Platinum single Ubu, an ARIA Gold single (Twilight Driving) and an AIR Best Independent Album award (Everything Is Forgotten). Methyl Ethel’s latest offering, Neon Cheap, is Talking Heads by way of ELO with a dash of nu rave; once again illustrating Webb’s canny ability to create wholly addictive pop earworms.

Live, Methyl Ethel has appeared at internationally renowned festivals including CMJ, SXSW, Outside Lands, Levitation, Green Man, Field Day, Falls Festival, Splendour in the Grass and Laneway Festival, and sold out headline shows at some of Australia’s most prestigious venues.

Amyl & The Sniffers

Amyl & The Sniffers

The Chats

The Chats

Formed in their mate’s shed on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast at age seventeen, The Chats represent everything that’s good about Australia: a rebel spirit, gallows humour and the endless hedonistic pursuit of A Bloody Good Time.

Don’t be mislead by The Chats dress-down image of mullets, shorts, sports tops, a sandals-and-socks combo and cheap sunnies. They are sharper than you think, and they write killer songs that hold their own in any era. When 2017 single ‘Smoko’ became a bona fide viral hit on Youtube, The Chats were propelled from their Queensland shed to almost overnight renown in all the right circles. Dave Grohl loved it so much he sent it to Josh Homme, who immediately booked the band to support Queens Of The Stone Age in Australia. Iggy Pop did the same when he played Melbourne.

In 2018, The Chats brought their ‘shed rock’ to the UK, where all shows sold out within a day and were immediately upgraded, including a memorable show at the Electric Ballroom, London, where they were joined onstage by Charlie Steen from Shame. Not bad considering the teenagers had never left Australia before.

The Chats released their debut album, High Risk Behaviour, in March 2020. The album debuted at No.5 on the ARIA Albums chart and features huge single ‘Pub Feed’, a song destined to take up residence in punk jukeboxes the world over.
We’re stoked to welcome The Chats to Splendour XR!

Wafia

Wafia

Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Wafia magnifies identifiable and idiosyncratic experiences in the form of alternative pop anthems. The gold-selling Netherlands-born Australia-based Iraqi-Syrian songstress relies on a keen sense of observation and sharp pen as she catalogs the world in real-time on her 2020 debut for Atlantic Records. Having kicked off her career with her 2014 debut single “Let Me Love You” and 2015 debut EP, XXIX, Wafia broke onto the mainstream with Louis The Child’s RIAA gold-certified smash, “Better Not” with subsequent praise from W, Idolator, Ladygunn, NPR, Wonderland, i-D, and more. Clocking nearly 300 million cumulative streams and earning the praise of The FADER and Refinery29, Wafia is keenly aware of her position in life and is committed to empowering marginalized communities, at home and abroad, and helping women of all shapes, sizes, and nationalities find themselves in her music. Art is personal to be sure, but Wafia firmly believes that gifts are meant to be shared and is passionate about sharing her gift with the world by creating an environment that says all are welcome here.

Her 2019 single “Hurts” with Louis The Child and Whethan bears that level of intimacy. Between dreamy synths and a delicate beat, her sweet delivery slips from understated verses into a strikingly soulful hook as she croons, “It hurts a little more, when you’re talking like that, every word you write back, if you really want me out the door.”

In the end, Wafia makes music you’ll treasure like an unforgettable memory.

Cat_&_Calmell

Cat & Calmell

Rising duo Cat & Calmell who first burst onto the scene in late 2020 with the anthemic ‘dumbshit’. They backed up the promise shown on their first release with ‘dramatic’; a brooding single with biting lyrics and an assured confident energy. Their playful breezy new single ‘jorge’ was written to immortalize the real life tale of the girls car breaking down on the way to a writing session and a kind stranger coming along to help, penned in collaboration with Lucy Pawws (Dua Lipa) and produced by NZ-based producer, Alex Wildwood (Broods).
Cat & Calmell have a rich history of performing together. Cat spent her childhood in China and moved to Sydney as a young teenager. Calmell was born and raised in Western Sydney. The music reflects their multi-faceted upbringings and their wide-ranging influences and sources of inspiration: Kali Uchis and The 1975 to Rihanna and T.S Eliot, Powerpuff Girls and Twitter memes.

The_Southern_River_Band

The Southern River Band

In a world where starting a biography with ‘In a world where’ is common practice, The Southern River Band are apparently no different.

They say you’re only as good as your last, and whoever ‘they’ may be, they’re dead right. The Southern River Band epitomise everything about that statement. Be it a life changing live show, soundtrack-to-the-rest-of-your-life song, cinematic masterpiece video, anything, no, everything – They never fail to raise their own bar.

To quote another Australian icon – “Do yaself a favour”.

Ziggy_Ramo

Ziggy Ramo

When it comes to racialized discrimination and injustice, silence is violence – and that makes Sydney-based hip hop and freestyle artist Ziggy Ramo the roaring sound of peace. Raised in remote Arnhem Land and influenced by artists and activists from Yasiin Bey and Lauryn Hill to Charlie Perkins and Adam Goodes, Ziggy’s voice addresses the silenced injustices of Aboriginal Australia and other social issues, speaking truth to power and giving voice to the disenfranchised and dispossessed.
Released at the height of 2020’s Black Lives Matter protests, Black Thoughts articulated a powerful, compassionate perspective expressed through brilliant lyricism, a sense of spiritual renewal, and grooves that echoed Ziggy’s beloved, Golden Era of hip-hop. It was named Album of the Year at the SMAC Awards, while April 25 took home the prize for Song of the Year.
After striking up a friendship with Paul Kelly that has ranged from coffee conversations to creative collaborations, Paul handed over the original iconic song From Little Things Big Things Grow for Ziggy to rework and share his message through the release of Little Things in 2021.
With his livestream performance wowing audiences at the Sydney Opera House last year, Ziggy Ramo is one live act you don’t want to miss.

Gretta Ray

Gretta Ray

Following the release of Bigger Than Me / Readymade (Duology One) in March, Melbourne singer-songwriter Gretta Ray unveils the second double A-side single to be lifted from her debut album, Human / Passion (Duology Two). This is the second pairing of songs in her Duology series: songs drawn from the same thematic heart to find their own unique places in her expanding catalogue of deeply felt, lushly produced pop.

“Human and Passion are both very much songs about an intimate relationship,” Gretta says. “It’s been so interesting to write about this concept, one that I’ve unpacked in every possible way since I was much younger, and to feel as though my feelings surrounding it have grown up with me over the past few years.”

Gretta’s debut album Begin To Look Around, will be released on August 27th and is available to pre-order now – a wondrous and empowering coming of age record. It chronicles the journey of a young artist navigating the winding lanes of womanhood, romance, heartbreak, travel and friendship.

At just 18, Gretta famously won Triple J Unearthed High and the prestigious Vanda & Young Songwriting Award for her high-rotation hit, Drive. Two EPs, Elsewhere (2016) and Here and Now (2018) have taken her from Falls Festival and Splendour to her first shows in the UK and USA opening for artists such as Mumford & Sons, Gang of Youths, Lianne La Havas and James Bay.

Be a part of Gretta Ray’s magic when she performs for Splendour XR!
